Let's Learn Korean!: Lesson 4

What time is it? It's time for another lesson. Are you ready?

Take note: if you haven't been through lesson 3, you will find this lesson confusing; so if you haven't go now!

Telling time is very important in our daily routine, right? Time tells us when to go to sleep, go to work, finish work, etc. How Koreans expressed time? When talking about time (minutes/hours) in Korean, it is common to use the Korean based numbers.

remember:

  • Time, as in "what time is it?" is 시(si) [she].
  • Time in a sense of "hour" is 시간 (sigan) [she-gun]
  • In a sense of "period of time" is 기간 (kigan) [key-gun]
  • In a sense of "occasion" (some other time) is 때 (Ttae) [thay]
  • Minute is 분 (pun/bun) [poon/boon]
  • Seconds is 초 (cho) [cho]
  • A.M is 오전 (ojeon) [oh-john]
  • P.M is 오후 (ohu) [oh-hoo]
  • Noon is 정오 (jeongo) [jung-oh]
  • Night is 밤 (pam) [pam]

1 o'clock- 1 시 (hansi) [han-she]
2 o'clock- 2 시 (tusi) [too-she]
3 o'clock- 3 시 (sesi) [se-she]
4 o'clock- 4 시 (nesi) [ne-she]
5 o'clock- 5 시 (taseotsi) [tahh-sot-she]
6 o'clock- 6 시 (yeoseotsi) [yo-sot-she]
7 o'clock- 7 시 (ilgeopsi) [eel-gope-she]
8 o'clock- 8 시 (yeodeolsi) [yo-dole-she]
9 o'clock- 9 시 (ahopsi) [ah-hope-she]
10 o'clock- 10 시 (yeolsi) [yole-she]
11 o'clock- 11 시 (yeolhansi) [yol-han-she]
12 o'clock- 12 시 (yeoltusi) [yole-too-she]

note:

  • Korean based when telling time in hour
  • Chinese based when telling time in minutes and seconds

For example,

4:05
4시 5분 (nesi obun) [ne-she oh-boon]

  • 4/ne is korean based while 5/oh is chinese based numbers.
another example,

6:30 P.M
오후 6시 30분 (ohu yeoseotsi samsippun) [oh-hoo yo-sot-she sam-ship-pun]

  • Put A.M or P.M before the actual time.

When asking time, you will say
몇시임니까? (myeochsiimnikka?) [myot-she-eem-ni-ka']
means What time is it? {formal}

When answering just add 임니다 (imnida) [eem-ni-the]
{formal} or nothing {informal}

For example,

It is 6:30.
6시 30분임니다. (yeoseotshi samsippunimnida) {yo-sot-she sam-ship-pun-eem-ni-da]

Now you know how to tell time in Korean. Try it with your friends sometime.
